Color Information.
Unfortunately, the gem and jewelry industry does not have a consistent methodology for determining
or describing color in gemstones (Scroll down to the table if you want to skip the spiel).
The two main tools for determining color are "GemSet" by GIA [www.gia.edu] and "GemDialog" by
Howard Rubin [GemDialogue Systems, Inc].
- Both of these systems requires an individual to look at a stone and match the color to a reference.
- Both of these systems fail if the person grading the color has any kind of color vision
deficiency (approximately 8% of males have some color deficiency).
- Both of these systems require a closest approximation on the part of the color grader.
Currently, GIA is working with gemewizard.com on a system for color grading, "gemEwizard"
- Unless it is calibated, the actual color shown on a monitor is unknown.
- The monitor calibration equipment can be expensive.
- The method still requires a person to determine the best color fit.
We at Jazzan Jewels have developed our own approach to defining our colors.
- The color wheel is divided into 19 distinct segments.
- Each color is adjusted for max contrast to adjacent colors.
- Four exception colors are defined (Pink, Brown, Grey, Colorless).
- We are currently using color charts and closest approximations.
- We will progress to a colorimeter in the future.
