Clarity Grading Information.

Unlike most gemstone grading systems, we do not use Type I, II, or III classifications. Under those systems an emerald, a Type III gemstone (one typically with many eye visible inclusions) would be graded more leniently than type Type II or I stones would be. Under our system each stone is graded the same - so you always know what to expect.

All stones are cleaned and examined under 10x magnification.

The following definitions are used for faceted colored stone clarity grades:
  1. Eye Clean - The stone appears clean to the unaided eye, may have a few extremely minor inclusions.
  2. Slightly Included - Minute inclusions difficult to see with the unaided eye, under 10x loupe some inclusions are seen though usually none are reflected or seen in the table.
  3. Moderately Included - Minor inclusions somewhat easy to see with the unaided eye, some sparkle from inclusions may be seen visibly, usually no obvious inclusions on table.
  4. Heavily Included - Inclusions are prominent and have a negative effect on appearance or durability, may have inclusion on crown facets or may appear lightly cloudy in edges, typically nothing visible on table.
  5. Severely Included - Inclusions are prominent and have a severe effect on appearance and/or durability, very cloudy or visible inclusion across table or a reflected inclusion on table.

The following definitions are used for cabbed colored stone clarity grades:
  1. High - uniform color, no significant inclusions.
  2. Medium - may have inclusions or small fractures, generally uniform color.
  3. Low - color varies, significant inclusions and or fractures.

The GIA system is used for diamond clarity grades:
  1. FL - Flawless, no inclusions internally or externally under 10x examination, well cut and polished.
  2. IF - Internally Flawless, no internal inclusions under 10x examination, minor external blemishes or polish marks.
  3. VVS - Very Very Slightly included, very small inclusions barely visible under 10x magnification.
  4. VS - Very Slightly included, small inclusions seen under 10x magnification.
  5. SI - Slightly included, inclusions are easily visible under 10x magnification.
  6. I - Included, large inclusions, readily visible.

Note that the grades are more of a continuum rather than discrete steps. A certain number of inclusions do not make a grade, but rather the location of the inclusions and how they affect the overall appearance of the stone determines the grade.
